Your Cognitive Score: What It Measures and Why It Matters
You have a credit score, a VO2 max, a resting heart rate, and a body mass index. But until now, you had no single number representing your cognitive health.
The BrainWaves Cognitive Score changes that — a 0-100 composite measure of your brain health across five cognitive domains, designed to be tracked over months and years.
What the Cognitive Score Measures
Your Cognitive Score is a weighted composite of five domain scores:
1. Memory (25% weight)
Tests working memory (holding information in mind while manipulating it) and episodic memory (encoding and recalling sequences and events). Measured through pattern recall, sequence reproduction, and spatial memory tasks.
2. Attention (25% weight)
Measures sustained attention (maintaining focus over time), selective attention (filtering distractions), and attentional switching (shifting focus between tasks). Tested through continuous performance tasks, flanker tasks, and dual-task paradigms.
3. Processing Speed (20% weight)
How quickly you can perceive information, make decisions, and execute responses. Measured through reaction time tasks, symbol-digit matching, and visual search exercises. Processing speed is often the first domain to show age-related decline.
4. Executive Function (20% weight)
Planning, reasoning, cognitive flexibility, and inhibition. Tested through tower tasks, set-shifting exercises, and go/no-go paradigms. This domain reflects the "CEO" functions of your prefrontal cortex.
5. Verbal Fluency (10% weight)
Word retrieval speed, semantic associations, and language processing. Measured through category fluency (name as many animals as possible in 60 seconds), letter fluency, and semantic matching tasks.
How Scoring Works
Each domain generates a raw score based on your performance across multiple exercises. These raw scores are normalized against age and gender benchmarks to produce a 0-100 scale:
- 90-100: Exceptional — top 10% for your demographic
- 75-89: Above Average — performing well across domains
- 60-74: Average — typical for your age and gender
- 45-59: Below Average — some domains may benefit from targeted training
- Below 45: Needs Attention — significant gaps in one or more domains; consider professional evaluation

Why One Number Matters
A single composite score serves a critical purpose: it makes cognitive health legible. Most people won't interpret a raw processing speed score or a working memory span measurement. But "Your Cognitive Score is 72, down from 78 last quarter" is immediately meaningful.
The composite score is your headline. The domain breakdown is the story. Both are essential.
Longitudinal Tracking: Where the Real Value Lives
A single Cognitive Score is a snapshot. A series of Cognitive Scores is a trajectory — and that's where early detection becomes possible.
Consider two people who both score 70 today:
- Person A: Scored 68 three months ago, 70 today. Stable trajectory. No concern.
- Person B: Scored 82 three months ago, 70 today. A 12-point decline in one quarter. This pattern warrants investigation.
Point-in-time tests can't distinguish between these two cases. Longitudinal tracking can — and that distinction could mean years of earlier intervention.
What It's Not
The Cognitive Score is not a diagnostic tool. It doesn't diagnose dementia, Alzheimer's, or any clinical condition. It's a wellness metric — like a fitness tracker for your brain. If your trajectory suggests concern, the right next step is a conversation with a healthcare provider, not a diagnosis from an app.
We're deliberately transparent about this because the brain training industry has a history of overclaiming. BrainWaves.AI measures and tracks. Your doctor diagnoses.
